Lab Module 27: Plant Development

27.1: Tropic Effects

Experiment:

Illustration of auxin tropic experiment.

A: The tip of a shoot is removed from the plant.

B: The shoot tip is placed on a geletin cube. Auxin moves from the shoot tip into the cube.

C: The geletin cube with auxin is place on one side of the cut shoot tip.

D: The shoot tip is observered to bend (grow) away from the side with the auxin cube.

27.2: Apical Dominance

Experiment:

Illustration of auxin apical dominance experiment.

A: Growth of an intact shoot. The laterial buds near the apical meristem remain dormant.

B: Growth of a shoot with the apical meristem removed. Lateral buds near the shoot tip have broken their dormancy and grown to produce lateral branches.

C. Growth of a shoot with the apical meristem removed and with auxin applied to the cut surface. Lateral buds near the apcal meristem remain dormant.
